Architectural windows are windows that have unexpected shapes to them. They can be hexagonal, rounded at the top and many other configurations. The aesthetic effect is breathtaking. Most architectural windows are in visually prominent areas like front rooms, above an entryway, or in a living room or great room. Like bay and bow windows, they let lots of light in as well as provide an expansive view. The shape, however, adds another dimension of elegance. Bay Windows Transform a Room

Bay windows are one of the most attention-getting styles we install. Adding a bay window automatically adds drama and elegance to any room. They let lots of light in creating a bright, open, airy feeling. There are many configurations you can choose, including three- and four-window styles. The large center window allows for an uninterrupted view while the side windows can be casement or double hung to allow for ventilation. Visually speaking, a bay window makes the room feel larger, and physically speaking it actually makes the footprint of the room larger as well.

Wrap It Up and Put a Bow on It

Bow windows are very similar to bay windows and deliver basically the same benefits – a light, open, airy feeling as well as a wonderful view to the outdoors. Bow windows are a great alternative to bay windows when you don’t have the space for a bay window. Both styles extend outward, but bow windows don’t extend as far as bay windows. For instance, if you have a window in front of a porch or walkway, a bay window may intrude into the space too far to make it practical, whereas a bow window may fit just fine.

Doug’s Top Tips to Keep Your Home Cozier This Winter

Reduce Window & Door Condensation

Condensation on windows and doors is often caused by poor insulation in these areas. It can also be a sign of high humidity levels. If your windows are in good shape but just have old glass, you might consider replacing the glass with more efficient energy saving low-E glass. If the condensation is between the panes, this is most likely due to a broken seal. We can replace the fogged glass with new clean class without having to replace the entire window in most cases.

Replace Damaged Weather-Stripping

Weather-stripping is an effective way to seal those nooks and crannies around doors and windows. But if you are able to see sunlight peaking around your door, or it’s leaking cold air into your home, you might need to adjust the door or install new weather-stripping. Weather-stripping can get smashed over time and lose its effectiveness. We can service you door or weatherstripping, which is something many window, door and siding companies do not offer.

Make Sure Storm Windows Are Closed & Windows Are Locked

Closed fireplace flues, when a fire is burning, can cause smoke and ash to overcome your home.

How to Detect Moisture in Your Windows & What It Means

Window CondensationDuring the winter months, it is more common to see condensation, or moisture on your windows. Sometimes it is a harmless side effect of nature, other times it can signal a big problem for your windows. Here’s a simple guideline for you to follow that will help you detect what type of moisture you have on your windows, and what it means for you.

Interior Moisture on Windows

This type of condensation happens when there is a lot of moisture inside your home and the temperature of the window is colder than the air inside your home. This is a common problem these days, with many new homes having whole-home humidifiers and being built to be more energy efficient. Energy efficient home-sealing can make it difficult for moisture to make its way out of your home. Interior condensation can damage paint, plaster, and wood window sills. You can prevent this issue by running your bathroom fan when you shower, your kitchen fan when you cook, and occasionally open a window to allow moisture to make its way out of your home.

Exterior Moisture on Windows

Moisture on the exterior side of your windows is caused by dew. This happens when the window is colder than the dew point outside. This type of condensation doesn’t really cause any damage to your home or windows.

Condensation on the inside of your windows, between the panes, happens when the seal between the panes is broken. This signals a real problem in your windows. Make a Candyland window display, and hang your candy canes with festive red ribbon, or another of your choosing. Tie the ribbon to your curtain rod. It’s that simple. Make Your Own Snowflake Window Clings

Want a fun inside winter activity with the kids? These next two window display ideas are perfect as crafts with the kids, too. Window clings are gel-like self-adhesive stickers that peel off of your windows with ease, and don’t leave any sticky residue that could damage your windows. All you need is wax paper and puffy paint. You can make your own holiday shapes on the wax paper with the puffy paint. If you have very small kids, or just want them to look really good, trace them on the wax paper first with a pencil, then follow the outline with the puffy paint. Let the paint dry overnight, then carefully peel the designs off of the wax paper. Now you’re ready to decorate those windows!

Let It Snow . . . Indoors

Another great decorating craft to do with the kids is to make your own paper snowflakes! Cut out your one-of-a-kind snowflake designs, and a lot of them. When you’re done, tape them to invisible fishing line of varying lengths. Tie the fishing line to your curtain rod, and watch as the paper snowflakes spin and sway in the window, like real snow. DIY Holiday Wreaths for Your Kansas City Front Door

Show your holiday spirit this year. It doesn’t matter what holiday, if any, that you celebrate. You can display your cheer right on your front door this year, and we mean literally. All-Weather Window, Doors & Siding walks you through an easy tutorial on how to make your own holiday wreath.

What You’ll Need:

  • A Styrofoam wreath, straw wreath (still in plastic wrapping), wire wreath, or wet foam wreath
  • Big & small ornaments
  • Fresh or fake pine or other winter greens/brush
  • Accent pieces (berries, pinecones, etc.)
  • Glue gun, double sided tape, floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Festive ribbon

Ornament WreathGet Crafty With Ornaments

How you execute this craft will depend on the type of wreath you want to display. One colorful, and non-traditional approach is an ornament wreath. You can use old ornaments you already have, or buy some colorful round ornaments of varying sizes from your local grocery or craft store that are fairly inexpensive. You can also choose from an array of wreath bases, depending on what you prefer to work with.

Start by tying your ribbon around the top of your wreath. This will be used to hang the wreath from your door.

Next, start hot-gluing your larger ornaments to your wreath. Make sure you get in the insides and outsides too, but leave the back untouched. Then start filling in the gaps and spaces with the smaller ornaments.

Pine WreathCreate a Traditional Beauty

You can also go traditional with this wreath, and use pine tree snippings, or other wintergreens of your choice. The fake pine will last you forever, but the real stuff will probably just last this season.

It’s easier to use the wire wreath ring for this one. Take a bunch of snippings (3-4 pieces) and wrap the floral wire around, and twist it to secure the greens to the ring. Make sure to layer the next bunch of snippings slightly over the last. Do this all the way around. Use your cutters to clip any pieces that seem too long.

Lastly add any accents to your wreath. We love pinecones, cranberries, and burlap bows as accent additions to traditional wreaths.

We always suggest using an official door wreath hanger rather than pounding a nail into your door, which could permanently damage your door. A wreath hanger comfortably attaches over the top of your door, and has an adequately sized hook to hold your wreath in place. You can pick these up at most grocery stores and craft stores.

Helping Homeowners See More Clearly: All-Weather Window Project

Big Window Installation KCAll-Weather Window, Doors & Siding has been helping Kansas City area homeowners see more clearly for more than a quarter of a century. What we’ve found over the years is that each project is just as unique as its homeowner. We recently had the pleasure to work on an extensive windows and siding project that tested our skills and knowledge.

For this home in the Treemont subdivision, we installed more than 40 new windows and repaired some siding issues in just more than two weeks time. The home’s previous windows were beginning to rot, but the manufacturer had gone out of business, so they called All-Weather to help them out.

New Windows, Existing Custom Trim

While we replaced the windows, we did leave most of the existing interior trim. One of our biggest challenges was marrying the new windows with that trim. We completely replaced the exterior trim that was rotting with a vinyl and Fibrex combination trim. This means their new windows will be virtually maintenance free, and won’t ever rot.

We installed French wood hinged patio doors, surrounded by casement windows, as well as Palladian windows which add a great decorative flair, and also allow even more natural light into the home.
