Adding new windows always makes your home look nicer. But which types of windows really make people step back and say wow? We’ve installed replacement windows for years and while our customers are happy with the look, convenience and energy savings, the thing that excites them the most is when a window really makes a difference in their lives. There are several styles that seem to accomplish this whenever we install them.

Architectural Windows Are the Ultimate in Beauty

Architectural windows are windows that have unexpected shapes to them. They can be hexagonal, rounded at the top and many other configurations. The aesthetic effect is breathtaking. Most architectural windows are in visually prominent areas like front rooms, above an entryway, or in a living room or great room. Like bay and bow windows, they let lots of light in as well as provide an expansive view. The shape, however, adds another dimension of elegance. When you decide to upgrade your windows, consider adding a bay, bow, or architectural style window and add some extra pizzazz along with it. We can even transform an entire wall that may have smaller windows or just a couple of windows. Bay Windows Transform a Room

Bay windows are one of the most attention-getting styles we install. Adding a bay window automatically adds drama and elegance to any room. They let lots of light in creating a bright, open, airy feeling. There are many configurations you can choose, including three- and four-window styles. The large center window allows for an uninterrupted view while the side windows can be casement or double hung to allow for ventilation. Visually speaking, a bay window makes the room feel larger, and physically speaking it actually makes the footprint of the room larger as well.

Bow windows are very similar to bay windows and deliver basically the same benefits – a light, open, airy feeling as well as a wonderful view to the outdoors. Doug’s Top Tips to Keep Your Home Cozier This Winter

Kansas City winters can be harsh and unforgiving. This year, don’t let the outside weather determine how comfortable you are in your own home. There are many factors that determine the comfort of your home, but many are small and easily overlooked. All-Weather Window, Doors & Siding’s President, Doug Bennett, lists off his top tips to keep your home cozy and comfortable this winter.

Reduce Window & Door Condensation

Condensation on windows and doors is often caused by poor insulation in these areas. It can also be a sign of high humidity levels. If your windows are in good shape but just have old glass, you might consider replacing the glass with more efficient energy saving low-E glass. If the condensation is between the panes, this is most likely due to a broken seal. We can replace the fogged glass with new clean class without having to replace the entire window in most cases.

Replace Damaged Weather-Stripping

Weather-stripping is an effective way to seal those nooks and crannies around doors and windows. But if you are able to see sunlight peaking around your door, or it’s leaking cold air into your home, you might need to adjust the door or install new weather-stripping. Weather-stripping can get smashed over time and lose its effectiveness. We can service you door or weatherstripping, which is something many window, door and siding companies do not offer.

Make Sure Storm Windows Are Closed & Windows Are Locked

Storm windows add another layer to your home that cold breezes can’t penetrate. If yours are broken or missing, call our repair shop. We can repair your old ones, or make you new ones. If your sashes are not locked, the weatherstripping cannot do it’s job.

Close Fireplace Doors & Flue

Lastly, close the doors and flues to your fireplaces when they are not being used. This will help reduce the drafts and keep heat loss to a minimum. An open flue will suck the heat right up your chimney. But always check to make sure you open them before kindling up a fire. Closed fireplace flues, when a fire is burning, can cause smoke and ash to overcome your home.

How to Detect Moisture in Your Windows & What It Means

Window Condensation During the winter months, it is more common to see condensation, or moisture on your windows. Sometimes it is a harmless side effect of nature, other times it can signal a big problem for your windows. Here’s a simple guideline for you to follow that will help you detect what type of moisture you have on your windows, and what it means for you.

Interior Moisture on Windows

This type of condensation happens when there is a lot of moisture inside your home and the temperature of the window is colder than the air inside your home. This is a common problem these days, with many new homes having whole-home humidifiers and being built to be more energy efficient. Energy efficient home-sealing can make it difficult for moisture to make its way out of your home. Interior condensation can damage paint, plaster, and wood window sills. You can prevent this issue by running your bathroom fan when you shower, your kitchen fan when you cook, and occasionally open a window to allow moisture to make its way out of your home.

Exterior Moisture on Windows

Moisture on the exterior side of your windows is caused by dew. This happens when the window is colder than the dew point outside. This type of condensation doesn’t really cause any damage to your home or windows.

Moisture in between Window Panes

Condensation on the inside of your windows, between the panes, happens when the seal between the panes is broken. This signals a real problem in your windows. Make sure to clean your windows thoroughly before jumping to this conclusion. Use Those Candy Canes

Candy corn is the designated candy of the fall, but once winter comes around, it’s all about those candy canes. Instead of eating all of them (while tempting), why not put them to use in your holiday decorations. The red and white stripes are perfectly festive, and the cane shape is delightful. Make a Candyland window display, and hang your candy canes with festive red ribbon, or another of your choosing. Tie the ribbon to your curtain rod. It’s that simple. Make Your Own Snowflake Window Clings

Want a fun inside winter activity with the kids? These next two window display ideas are perfect as crafts with the kids, too. Window clings are gel-like self-adhesive stickers that peel off of your windows with ease, and don’t leave any sticky residue that could damage your windows. All you need is wax paper and puffy paint. You can make your own holiday shapes on the wax paper with the puffy paint. If you have very small kids, or just want them to look really good, trace them on the wax paper first with a pencil, then follow the outline with the puffy paint. Let the paint dry overnight, then carefully peel the designs off of the wax paper. Now you’re ready to decorate those windows!

Another great decorating craft to do with the kids is to make your own paper snowflakes! Cut out your one-of-a-kind snowflake designs, and a lot of them. When you’re done, tape them to invisible fishing line of varying lengths. Tie the fishing line to your curtain rod, and watch as the paper snowflakes spin and sway in the window, like real snow.
